Fish release is a form of setting animals free. In Mahayana Buddhism, it is regarded as a way of practicing Bodhicitta. Bodhicitta consists of two essential parts. First is your intension to help all sentient beings reach the Buddhahood. Second is your determination to drive yourself to reach the Buddhahood. As the stepping stone of Bodhicitta practice, your must generate great compassion towards all sentient beings, dedicating your life to eliminate their suffering. In the eyes of Buddhists, animals are not just animals we see. They used to be our beloved mothers for countless times. In this life, according to our karmic deeds, they are born as animals. We as human beings. So, to help them now and forever, we rescue them from being killed, chant mantras to them, and set them free.
